We mentioned that New Year’s Eve parties are not really our thing. We prefer to go out for the afternoon, before things get too crazy. So this time around we decided to do a bit of a pub crawl in Linden. Too bad everything was closed. EVERYTHING! Luckily, we had a Plan B ready – to check out the new Jerry’s Burger Bar in Illovo.
Jerry’s is very well known in the Western Cape, with 5 restaurants already operating there. There is a Jerry’s in Greenside, but we decided to check out the brand-spanking-new restaurant at the Thrupps Centre (it helps that Thrupps is probably the most amazing grocer in Gauteng).
Don’t expect Jerry’s Burger Bar to be a typical all-American diner type joint. The restaurant has a definite sophistication about it, almost like a New York style restaurant. The vibe is still pretty relaxed, and we were made to feel welcome by the very attentive staff.
Jerry’s Burger Bar has a variety of starters, plus other mainstays like wings, tacos, and ribs. But we were craving a burger, and went straight to the burger section of the menu (driving around is hungry and thirsty work). The selection of burgers available is quite extensive, as one would expect of a burger bar with Jerry’s reputation. The most interesting offer is the ramen burger, where the bun is replaced by bun-shaped ramen. I almost went for this one, but thought it may be a bit too hipsterey. Maybe next time…
I decided on the Korean Burger – hot and saucy basting, served with melted cheese, bacon, kimchi, and spicy mayo.
The burger was cooked to perfection, and all the ingredients combined to expertly pleasure my face hole. As you may know, I have strict requirements for a burger, chief of which is that you need to be able to eat it with your hands. I’m pleased to report that Jerry’s Burger Bar ticks all my boxes. In fact, this was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a very long time. The skinny fries were pretty fucking amazing too.
To wash all of this exquisite burger down, we had a 2017 Anura Chardonnay. It’s slightly oaked, and the floral bouquet complimented the burger’s basting perfectly. The citrus flavour of the wine worked well with the cheese and bacon – in all, a very good match.
I was incredibly charmed by Jerry’s Burger Bar. Everything about it – from the café racer at the entrance, to the Sailor Jerry wallpaper – just works together to create a charming, laid-back restaurant to while away the afternoon. The food is excellent, and the staff is very competent. What a great way to send off the old year, and to look forward to our first visit to Jerry’s in 2018.

You had me a ‘burger bar’! We are constantly looking out for the perfect burger. And yes, size matters. If you can’t grab it with both hands, it is a waste! Okay, that sound as if I am talking about something totally different. Annnnd… leaving it there!
Every time we go to stock up on awesomesness at Thrupps, we would sloooowly drive past the newest Jerry’s Burger Bar venue to monitor the progress. So it worked out perfectly that we actually spent our last lunch of 2017 at this brand new eatery.
We sat outside on the patio, sipping wine (okay, I can’t resist a good Dark ‘n Stormy, so that was my first drink!) watching the traffic go by, just seriously relaxing. And I really had difficulty deciding what to order. Oh the pressure!
Just listen to this, loving the names of these burgers: Sweet Baby Cheeses, After Burner, Drunken Chicken – and then also Lucy’s 7 Deadly sins, namely Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Wrath. You must go and check out the menu to see more!
After a lot of internal deliberation, and NS getting a little impatient with me, I decided to try the Thai Chicken Burger, with sweeeeet potato fries.
Chicken fillet, peanut satay and Thai slaw. Colourful, fresh and scrumptious! This is one delicious burger. The sweet potato fries complimented it perfectly.
I must go back to try Jerry’s wings. And a few more burgers. And a few cocktails. And I saw a few dessert options on the menu that looked simply divine!
A fabulous final lunch of 2017! We will be back!
