#JanuWorry: Café Picobella Trattoria

Noble Savage (he said):

Those of you following #BoozySavageJanuworry will know we’ve already saved R155 using the Entertainer App. That’s not a bad start, if I do say so myself. So when it came time for lunch, we headed out to Café Picobella Trattoria in Melville for a two-for-one deal. Café Picobella Trattoria is located on a nice and quiet street in Melville, away from the hustle and bustle of the main street.

The restaurant is a renovated house, with a nice big stoep where you can check out all the cars and people going past. The décor has a strong Roman Catholic feel, with sacred hearts and Virgin Mary’s all over the show. Centre stage inside is taken by the wood fire oven, tastefully decorated with mosaic tiles.

I opted for the Barbonne pizza – Italian sausage, chicken, red onion, and mixed peppers. And itcertainly is one of the best-looking pizza’s I’ve seen.

The toppings worked very well, but the pizza itself was a bit dry. I would have preferred it to have a bit more sauce. The pizza menu is separate from the main menu, and I got the distinct feeling that pizza might not be their strong point. The rest of the menu looks really interesting, and I would love to try out their platters. Even though the pizza wasn’t the best, I will definitely go back to try out some of the more traditional Italian fare. The vibe is so relaxed and laid back, and would be perfect for group gatherings.

Thanks to The Entertainer app, we saved R112 on this trip, which gives us a grand total of R267. So we’ve basically covered our early bird subscription, and this was only our second outing. Brilliant!

I found Café Picobella Trattoria very charming indeed. I can imagine that it can feel like home for a lot of people – the fact that it is located in an old house, we received warm and welcoming service and looking at the menu – serve family-style Italian food.

The stoep (patio) is the ideal spot to watch the world go by – very slowly – and sip on a beautiful bottle of wine!

It is usually very difficult for me to see ‘arancini’ on a menu and not order it….

These rustic riceballs, stuffed with sundried tomatoes, were quite delicious!  An interesting texture, different from arancini I’ve had before; that is often made with risotto rice.  Country-style food!

I decided to order the “Bianca al Cantina”:  focaccia bread with Parma ham, fresh rocket, avocado and Parmesan cheese. Looks delicious, doesn’t it?

I must admit, the crust was a little too thin and too crispy for me, but the toppings worked so well together!  Yes, I realise that this is a focaccia, and not a cheesy pizza, so maybe next time I will try something different on the menu.  And the reason I ordered this was because I wanted a healthier option, so it was still good though!

I would love to go back sometime, and try some of their other menu items – I spotted some grilled polenta fries that are calling my name!

And, thanks to The Entertainer App, it is always great to try out a few new restaurants!
